Photoshop was developed in 1987 by American brothers Thomas and John Knoll. They sold the distribution license to Adobe Systems Incorporated in 1988. Since then, Adobe Photoshop has become the industry standard for editing raster graphics. This program is for MacOS and Windows but not for Linux.

Adobe Photoshop is commonly used by designers, web developers, graphic artists, photographers, and creative professionals. Launching the American Graphics Institute, the function of Adobe Photoshop is to create and edit images in multiple layers, manipulate images, and retouch photos for various image and video file formats. Adobe Photoshop has the ability to create, enhance, or edit individual or large numbers of images, artwork, and illustrations.

Adobe Photoshop uses include:

  • Manipulate the color of the image.
  • Crop the image.
  • Fixed flaws, such as dust on the lens or red eyes.
  • Draw on the image with a pen or pencil.
  • Add text to images.
  • Delete people or objects in the picture.
  • Organize photos for quick access.
  • Publish images online or send by email.

There are several versions of Photoshop, including Photoshop CS, Photoshop CC, Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Lightroom, and Photoshop Express. Adobe Photoshop’s default file extension is .PSD (Photoshop Document). PSD files have a maximum width and height of 30,000 pixels and a file length limit of 2 gigabytes.

Another Photoshop file type is .PSB (Photoshop Big). PDB is a large document format that extends the maximum height and width limits of the PSD to 300,000 pixels and extends the length limit to approximately 4 exabytes. In addition, Adobe Photoshop can save or export images and graphics in various file formats that are used for different purposes. File formats that can be opened or saved with Adobe Photoshop, including PSD, PSB, TIFF, RAW, PDF, GIF, PNG, JPEG, Cineon.
